Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Beth Campbell

The first artist to kick off the Visiting Artist Lecture Series was Beth Campbell.  She is an installation artist that works both in video and sculpture.  The works that I found myself impressed by were her sculpture installation, Following Room (1), and her graphite on paper drawings.

Following Room is an installation work that is composed of twelve sections that are built to make it seem as if each section has mirrors which reflect it’s opposite.  I know.....this seems very confusing.  Even know as I am writing this, I am still trying to figure the work out.  While she was discussing this, I kept on thinking that this must challenge the way reality it perceived.  When this installation is seen, it is perceived to be a room surrounded by mirrors, but when the viewer realizes that there are no mirrors, it is just different sections built to reflect opposites, they become aware and realize that their eyes and minds have been playing tricks.

Then there are her graphite on paper drawings (2) which were discussed last night.  These works are composed of words that connect to each other by lines, like the way a family tree is built.  The drawings seem simplistic but there is much more to them then just what is on the surface.  I am reminded of cause and effect when looking upon the drawings closely (3).  She seems to want to reflect on her existence in time through words rather then visually, i.e. drawing or painting a portrait of her self.
